Outwood Academy Portland is a truly amazing place; the combination of outstanding, caring staff and committed, hardworking students makes every day remarkable.
The level of progress and achievement made by students is breathtaking, with results exceeding the top 1% of the country and students maturing into well rounded, intelligent, young adults – it is easy to see why staff and students value their time at Portland.
The learning environment and supportive ethos is all part of our vision, to offer a level of education that is undoubtedly world class.
We are delighted to announce that Outwood Academy Portland has been successful in achieving Teaching School status under the umbrella of the Outwood Institute of Education. Sir Michael Wilkins, Academy Principal and Chief Executive of OGAT, added “I am very proud of the success at Portland, and the hard work by staff and students that has made ‘Ofsted Outstanding’ and ‘Teaching School’ status possible.”
Teaching Schools take a leading role in recruiting and training new entrants to the profession, identifying leadership potential and providing support for other schools. Outwood Academy Portland is one of just 61 schools in the whole of England to be granted teaching school status in the latest round.
Teaching Schools have been in existence since 2011 and are all rated as “outstanding". They work with partner schools in an alliance to ensure high quality school-led initial teacher training and professional development opportunities for teachers at all stages of their career. They raise standards through supporting other schools, engage in research and development, and ensure that the most talented school leaders are spotted and supported to become successful headteachers.
Dr Philip Smith, the Principal of Outwood Academy Portland said: “I am delighted that Portland has been recognised as a centre of excellence. It is a great honour to be a Teaching School and to be in the position to improve the life-chances for children in other schools across our region. We are looking forward to working closely with the existing Outwood Institute of Education to spread the great work they do to the East Midlands and South Yorkshire”.
